Martial Arts Accomplishment

Martial arts schools in Phoenix AZ are numerous to say the least. Extending outward into the bordering cities are dozens more schools. Possibly the majority have a belt ranking system, often with a black belt as the highest colored belt rank. Every school or martial art style has its policies and philosophy regarding rank promotions and advancement in the eyes of the instructors, standards of skills that must be obtained for advancement and so on. Leung Ting WingTsun® is similar but also a little different in this regard.

Leung Ting WingTsun® uses patches to indicate rank advancement, twelve student grades before full instructor level. The belt system is a development of the Japanese styles. Wing Tsun is of Chinese origins and therefore does not use a colored belt system nor do we wear the Japanese uniforms called a “gi.” The ‘gi” was patterned after the Japanese kimono and a belt or sash as a common form of dress in historical Japan.

In Leung Ting WingTsun®, the rank we hope students will aspire to is the Primary Level Technician which comes after 12th Student Grade. This might be compared to a First Degree black belt in another art.

Accomplishment does not stop at the Primary Level in Wing Tsun. Far from it. The advanced techniques of the third form (Biu Tze) and the 116 Wooden Dummy Techniques are learned in the first five Technician Levels. For those who studied in a school where the most interesting training sort of petered out after reaching black belt, come find us. It won’t end at the Primary Level!

The common form of dress for Hong Kong kung-fu schools in the 20th century has been a white t-shirt, owing to the warm temperatures there. Therefore, the Leung Ting WingTsun® uniform for students is a white t-shirt and a practical black, elastic bottom trouser. Traditional kung-fu slippers as you have seen late Grandmaster Yip Man wear, complete the uniform. Your patches go on your left sleeve at Wing Tsun Arizona. To get the Primary Level, you learn step-by-step until you reach black shirt student grades at Ninth Student Grade. Then it is four more steps to Primary Level Technician! Let’s get started!
