The First Few Martial Arts Defense Movements

In the first few martial arts defense movements one learns in Wing Tsun classes, it is not immediately apparent what the techniques could be used for. Wing Tsun kung-fu is like a car in that if one takes a mechanical part off the engine and show it to a student of auto mechanics, the student might not know how this helps to make the car run. This is because the car needs all the engine and drive train parts to make it run.

The same is true of Wing Tsun. The first few movements one learns are the first few parts of the form called the “Little Idea Form” (Siu Nim Tau). All the parts must be put together to work. However, a student must first practice parts of the form and then put them together when the parts are learned well.

Leung Ting WingTsun® is taught systematically, building from the ground up. Each step builds physical attributes in the person. Starting at the ground level, the ankles, calves, adductor muscles, and hips are all challenged. The upper body is stretched and strengthened from the back muscles to the arms.

All the techniques of the Wing Tsun martial art system are represented in the Siu Nim Tau form. At the same time as a student learns the movements, they also learn the way they are applied against Wing Tsun and non-Wing Tsun attacks.

The teaching is presented in a logical way. Each step forward with increases in the student’s skills and higher learning is represented with a new rank. However, we do not have a belt ranking system. Instead, we have Student Grades one through twelve. Students must pass a test for each rank. Ranks are backed up by our world-wide association, the IWTA.

Our martial arts defense movements are second to no one in effectiveness and are logical for today’s varied environment and different circumstances.
