Ranks

The Student Stage, is made up of twelve Student Grades from the beginner to the advanced. Each of the 12 Student Grades is represented by one of the colored plum-blossom patch which are attached to the t-shirt of the student.  Each level consists of learning Forms, Footwork, Applications, and free hand fighting drills. Chi sau (single sticky hands) begins at 3rd SG for the 4th SG test.

1st Student Grade

Siu Nim Tau form and applications

3 – 6 months

2nd Student Grade

Siu Nim Tau form and applications of part 2

3 – 5 months

3rd Student Grade

Siu Nim Tau form and applications of part 3

3 – 5 months

4th Student Grade

Dan Chi Sau – single arm chi sau (sticky hands) and Chum Kiu form, applications

3 – 5 months

5th Student Grade

Chi Sau, Poon Sau and basic chi sau (sticky hands) attacks and defenses, use of knees and elbows and remainder of Chum Kiu form

3 – 5 months

6th Student Grade

Chi Sau Section One first attack and applications, take downs and follow up.

4 – 6 months

7th Student Grade

Chi Sau Section One additional material for Chi Sau section, continued

4 – 6 months

8th Student Grade

Chi Sau Section One, final Chi Sau One movements, continued plus official start of lat sau.

4 – 6 months

9th Student Grade

Multiple Attackers, Chi Sau Section Two

5 – 6 months

10th Student Grade

Chi Sau Section Two and weapons defenses

5 – 6 months

11th Student Grade

Chi Sau Section Three and begin Section Four and soft defenses

3 – 6 months

12th Student Grade (pre-Primary Level)

6 – 8 months

Technician Stage

The Technician Levels 1 through 4 are the full instructor levels and are able to use the techniques of WingTsun although have not yet attained mastery.

Practician Stage

Practician Level instructors, levels 5 through 8, are regarded to have mastered the techniques of WingTsun and are able to use the techniques of WingTsun at will.

The Stage of Enlightenment

The very best WingTsun martial artists have attained levels 9 through 12. They have taken their art from physical skill to mental discipline , and transcended the bounds of WT to embrace all the popular martial art styles.

Assistant Instructors

When reaching the 9th – 12th student grade you have the opportunity to be instructed as an assistant instructor.

They are students in Black shirts with their corresponding rank affixed to the left shirt sleeve. (More information here)
