Learning Out of Context

At Wing Tsun Martial Arts in Gilbert AZ, we start your training where it should start; at the beginning. For those considering learning just the sticky hands techniques and applications (even just a few of them) of Wing Chun (or Ving Tsun or even Wing Tsun), from an instructor willing to try and teach it to a novice or a person of another style that may not have been taught the first part of the system, there is a caveat. Do not expect what you have been shown to work for you in real situations. Wing Tsun is not a grab bag of techniques that you can just pull out of context, mimic and be able to use in a real situation.

PSST! WE HAVE THIS GREAT MARTIAL ARTS DUMMY FOR SALE WITH INSTRUCTIONS

We have all seen the offers and videos to sell a martial arts dummy or give away martial arts dummy instruction. There are many versions of martial arts dummies on the market. Some of these altered versions of the original ancient devices may have some benefit to a user if the user is realistic enough to know that this small device is not going to turn them into a master of martial arts overnight. The Chinese martial arts dummy has seen alterations from the original wooden construction to plastic, composites and even metal.

Martial Arts Training Dummy

Martial Arts Training Dummy

One of the most interesting pieces of training equipment in the martial arts is the martial arts training dummy. It almost seems like an obvious training device but there were few such training dummies in existence in the 1960s and 70s when I started in the martial arts!

Your Self Confidence

Your Self Confidence

WingTsun’s step-by-step training program addresses your self confidence. It helps the student gain self-confidence by taking the correct topics first before moving on to more advanced topics.

The style is designed as a teaching system and Grandmaster Leung Ting prefers the word ‘system’ to ‘style’ because it is more descriptive of what WingTsun™ is. Forms practice is not the main focus of WingTsun. However, it must be discussed because the forms are the conceptual basis and WingTsun is more of a concept than a ‘style.’

Wing Tsun Fighting

Wing Tsun Fighting

As many people who surf the internet might know, there is a great deal of uninformed nonsense about Wing Chun / Wing Tsun/ Ving Tsun. Most are easily refuted with a little bit of research.

What is true is that Grandmaster Yip Man taught everybody differently. Why this happened I will leave to my Si-fu, WingTsun Grandmaster Leung Ting’s explanations in his book Roots and Branches of Wing Tsun.

Wing Tsun as passed down to the present day is meant to be a complete fighting system. If people misinterpret it, it is not because there is something ‘missing’ in the art.

Wooden Dummy Techniques of WingTsun Kung-fu

Wooden Dummy Techniques of WingTsun Kung-fu

The wooden dummy (Muk-Yan Chong) is one of the features of WingTsun™ kung – fu that has made the art famous.  Bruce Lee was a famous user of the wooden dummy as a training tool.  It was again featured in the recent “Ip Man” movies.

The wooden dummy training has been applied in different ways according to the interpretations of the individual trainee and Wing Tsun, Wing Chun or Ving Tsun lineage.  Some want to use it to build strength and toughness in the forearms and legs.  Some use it in the context of a martial art other than that of Yip Man.
