Forward Energy

There are analogies for life within the art of Wing Tsun kung-fu. One such analogy is the idea of forward energy.

Martial arts analogies exist in other arts but Wing Tsun seems to have many, perhaps because of its concepts. To prevail in an encounter with an opponent, it can be necessary to maintain forward energy and forward direction. To stand still can be deadly to you. Forward energy and forward movement forces an attacker to spend time and attention to deal with you. In addition, it is far more difficult to stop, block or deflect an oncoming counterattack than one that stands still. A moving target is difficult. One that is coming right at you is worse.

Dealing with attacks has analogies to daily living

Wing Tsun martial artstechnique and practice contains a philosophy which could be described as “come what may.”   Dealing with attacks have analogies to daily living.

In dealing with attacks, Wing Tsun practice does not advocate trying to imagine or predict what may occur and, instead, we deal with problems as they come up without concern as to their ‘terribleness.’  Each punch, kick, grab, sweep, or other technique is looking at as something we have to deal with as it occurs.  This is also a good idea in life as well since worry is a fruitless mental activity.

A Journey . . .

Many laypeople believe that a martial art is just for self defense. Others say “If you are so worried about somebody attacking you, why not carry a gun or stay out of bad neighborhoods.” Others believe that martial arts are some kind of cult, or “fight club.” Until you begin the training at a true martial arts school, you may not understand the personal benefits of WingTsun™ training that go beyond self defense. Many believe that if you start martial arts training, you must think you are tough. Surely it must be the opposite. By starting martial arts training, you must think you need some toughening! “Tough guys” usually do not last with an instructor who was properly taught by an instructor with a traditional attitude. The traditional societal attitude was that martial arts were for personal and family protection, not for bullying others and so bullies are screened out in a good martial arts school.
