A Complete Self Defense Martial Art

The internet seems rife with claims about which is the best self defense martial art or which is more effective in a seemingly endless effort to recruit more students. Claims of ineffectiveness based on a video of one martial artist beating another are a waste of anybody’s attention. Any person can beat another at any given moment based on many factors which may not be obvious in a video. Calls to join schools or arts based on questionable reasoning are common. Calls appealing to convenience, faster learning, instant success, solving a problem you have with crime in your neighborhood with a few quick visits to your local self-defense practitioner are also frequent. What seems to be forgotten is whether a martial art offers something a person is looking for such as a fitness and health regimen they can handle, a recreational activity, a unique skill to learn, or a reasonable expectation of learning common self-defense. After all, most people do not expect to be attacked by a champion ring fighter.

SELF DEFENSE CONCEPTS

Among martial arts classes in the east valley are the Gilbert self defense classes presented periodically for Wing Tsun students by Wing Tsun Arizona. They are presented as ‘special topics’ classes. They teach concepts rather than fixed techniques against pre-set attacks. Since Wing Tsun kung-fu is already a comprehensive self-defense system, it is redundant to present a separate self-defense class.

MARTIAL ARTS EFFECTIVENESS

To analyze martial arts effectiveness, first one must define whether it is important to be effective for participation in a sport as in tournaments or ring fighting or for self-defense. WingTsun™ is practiced as a self-defense system while offering a mental training that directs a student to the simplest solution in an encounter and improved overall confidence. Complex procedures have the effect of possibly failing in a real situation.

In a self-defense class, if you are taught to dissolve an arm grab by circling your arm in a clock wise direction for the right arm grab, are you really going to remember, in a panic situation, which arm grab requires clock-wise or counter-clock wise rotation? The WingTsun concept is to simply hit / kick your attacker. Complex procedures are time-consuming. Time is a critical element in all self-defense.

MARTIAL ARTS FOR SELF DEFENSE

Martial Arts for Self Defense

Nearly all instructors say that their schools offer martial arts for self defense. It is usually in their list of activities and benefits but the inevitable emphasis and the way they remain a large scale business is to offer martial arts for competition, that is, for tournaments. Competition and martial arts together certainly offer character-building elements similar to other sports.

Martial arts for self defense such as Wing Tsun really do specialize in the idea of real time self defense abilities. Offered correctly, martial arts for self defense can be a fantastic way to gain confidence and at the same time, gaining coordination and overcoming fears. This is what motivates this writer – offering this kind of confidence to a student.

Learning Unique Skills

Learning Unique Skills

It did not take me long after beginning WingTsun™ training to figure out that I was learning certain high level skills in the martial arts. I had studied another style for eight years and during that time I read and read some more. We did not have the internet so I just read books and magazines about what exists in the martial arts world. At the time, I never thought I would have an opportunity to dive straight into the “deep end” of the practice of high level skills found mostly in the Chinese martial art systems.

Improve Your Senses and Consciousness

Improve Your Senses and Consciousness

In order to stick to your attacker’s arms, you must live in the present moment and not let your attention waiver.

Learning a tactile skill like chi sau in the art of WingTsun kung-fu can improve your senses and consciousness. Relying on just the sense of touch or more like sticking with your training partner’s arms (or legs!) allows you to know when a person is about to make a move. One can also feel the direction and amount of power a person is using. The time factor in response to an attacker’s movements is reduced to zero! What many martial arts instructors never get around to explaining is that if an attacker wants to rain punches down on you at full speed, no block, no defense of any kind that does not involve ‘stick’ can prevent those punches from hitting you. In addition, the best defense is a good offense in such a situation.

Little things add up to plenty

Little things add up to plenty

Speaking as a Wing Tsun Self Defense instructor, in Wing Tsun, little things add up to plenty. The Leung Ting WingTsun® system works on skills, which is a difference from some performance-oriented martial arts wherein the goal is to look good. When working on skills, we teach the way things function for maximum results in a self defense situation. In the process of doing this, the student learns the way the body works and how to self-train at home between classes for self defense application.
