Lat Sau means “Free Hand Fighting.” Wing Tsun does not have anything called sparring. Wing Tsun is focused on the “short fight.” In self-defense, it is important to deal a disabling attack as soon as possible. A long fight goes against the survival of the defender. The idea of Wing Tsun is to give the non-athlete or the non-fighter a better chance through skills and technical advantages against a thug who cares nothing about your training, non-training, personal safety and so on.
In Lat Sau, participants wear protective gear and fight for 10 -30 seconds in most cases. No winner is declared. It is that important that vital training is taking place. Lat sau is technically possible at 8th or 9th SG. However special Lat Sau classes are offered periodically for lower ranks.
