The legs are the first to go

The legs are the first to go

The saying goes that “the legs are the first to go.”  How true this is depends on many factors of course.  If you eventually get arthritis, knee problems, hip problems, ankle problems, or diabetes and you have to have surgeries on your legs well before you retire, your primary means of transportation is now out of commission or severely curtailed.  It is important to get up and move!  Doctors always recommend exercise.  Martial arts are a great way to get leg exercise.

What to expect at your first WingTsun™ Kung Fu class…

Our WingTsun trial classes are individualized.  No previous experience is necessary.  Come dressed in regular workout clothes: long trousers, white t-shirt and athletic shoes.

Through my training under my si-fu, Great Grand Master Leung Ting, years of practice with numerous practitioners and personal experience, I have made the following observations about WT chi sau 粘手 :

WingTsun chi sau is a special practice for intermediate students and above.

Chi sau skill develops with continual regular practice.

Chi sau is not real fighting but an element of reality must always be present in real WT chi sau.

Chi sau skill is not an end in itself but is a skill that is to be transferred to real fighting applications.

Home Projects in WingTsun™ Kung Fu:

A student working for higher skill levels should be scheduling his or her “home projects” once per week or once per month in WingTsun™ training.  Based on the “little idea” concept, a student should work to perfect one simple skill such as the changing man sau position from left man sau to right man sau or the Sun Thrusting punch with huen sau or the turning stance. The student should consider what he or she feels the need to work on this week or this month and work on it exclusively at home or almost exclusively together with a ten minute workout.  Using this kind of focus, one can soon do away with problems coping with more advanced techniques at the WingTsun classes.

When I began Leung Ting WingTsun® training under Great Grandmaster Leung Ting, one of the first big points he made was that I was to avoid weight training because it would tighten my muscles and I would not learn the “force borrowing” skills or the “soft power” skills of WingTsun™.  Although it was controversial in many circles at that time, I followed his instructions.

All these many years later, I realize why he gave me those instructions.  Followers of many physical disciplines and sports can #benefit from a concurrent program of weight training.  However in WingTsun it is very difficult to mentally and physically reconcile the two training programs and get full performance at the same time …

Part of the Mental Training

Part of the Mental Training

Part of the mental training of WingTsun is in the Siu Nim Tau and Chum Kiu forms training. Doing the Siu Nim Tau each and every day is vitally important to clarifying one’s thinking. Once or twice is enough if it is done well. The movements themselves are less important than one’s mental attitude during the session. The peace and tranquility of the session is the first thing. Turn off radios and televisions. Get some cool air moving gently (not blowing cold air). Move through the faster movements with medium power and medium speed. Do not rush through it. Move and be very relaxed but brisk.

A Journey . . .

Many laypeople believe that a martial art is just for self defense. Others say “If you are so worried about somebody attacking you, why not carry a gun or stay out of bad neighborhoods.” Others believe that martial arts are some kind of cult, or “fight club.” Until you begin the training at a true martial arts school, you may not understand the personal benefits of WingTsun™ training that go beyond self defense. Many believe that if you start martial arts training, you must think you are tough. Surely it must be the opposite. By starting martial arts training, you must think you need some toughening! “Tough guys” usually do not last with an instructor who was properly taught by an instructor with a traditional attitude. The traditional societal attitude was that martial arts were for personal and family protection, not for bullying others and so bullies are screened out in a good martial arts school.
