Speaking as a Wing Tsun Self Defense instructor, in Wing Tsun, little things add up to plenty. The Leung Ting WingTsun® system works on skills, which is a difference from some performance-oriented martial arts wherein the goal is to look good. When working on skills, we teach the way things function for maximum results in a self defense situation. In the process of doing this, the student learns the way the body works and how to self-train at home between classes for self defense application.

For example, in the freeing hand action from the last section of the first form, a certain coordinated action of one’s two arms moving together but in opposite directions makes a big difference in the success of the action when one’s wrist is grabbed by a much larger, stronger attacker. In addition, one’s posture during this action means the difference between being hit in the face or not and then going on to finish the action without permanent injury. The muscle memory of this action is not substantially different from movements learned earlier. Wing Tsun principals remain consistent throughout. Spending time on certain small skills is time well-spent. You will need that skill later in possibly a dangerous self-defense situation!

Little things add up to plenty when you train your arm to return to the ‘protect hand’ position thus protecting your center line. The ‘a lot’ part means that it could save your life.
