Self Confidence

WingTsun™ training might take you out of your comfort zone. If so, this can only be a big plus for your self confidence, if not now, then in the very near future.

As a martial art, WingTsun is also a system for step-by-step learning. Once you have learned to do separate things with each hand at the same time, you know you are on your way.

Once you have learned to advance forward in a stance with all the weight on one leg allowing you to throw kick at an attacker with the unweighted leg without signaling your attacker, you know you have come further down the road.

The ability to intercept and stay with an attacker’s arms will give you further confidence that you can achieve more.

If an attacker can grab, block, or interrupt your punch without it affecting your forward advance, your kick, or your other hand, it will add to your self confidence.

Conquering Your Fear

Lay people always ask me, “Do I have to be in shape, ‘do the splits like Van Damme’ or ‘like to fight’ to be good at kung-fu?” “No,”  I answer.  “You just have to have some intestinal fortitude.” Surprised, they ask why.  The reason is because a student must face his or her own deficiencies every time they come to class. This, and not the hard work, is the most difficult part. This fact is countered by the student’s fierce desire to correct these deficiencies and develop the confidence of knowing that if grabbed, swung at or otherwise threatened, the student can stand his or her ground and dissipate or channel fear into action.

Our WingTsun trial classes are individualized.  No previous experience is necessary.  Come dressed in regular workout clothes: long trousers, white t-shirt and athletic shoes.

Home Projects in WingTsun™ Kung Fu:

A student working for higher skill levels should be scheduling his or her “home projects” once per week or once per month in WingTsun™ training.  Based on the “little idea” concept, a student should work to perfect one simple skill such as the changing man sau position from left man sau to right man sau or the Sun Thrusting punch with huen sau or the turning stance. The student should consider what he or she feels the need to work on this week or this month and work on it exclusively at home or almost exclusively together with a ten minute workout.  Using this kind of focus, one can soon do away with problems coping with more advanced techniques at the WingTsun classes.

MUSCLE CONTROL

Learning to control one’s muscles is one of the most important benefits of WingTsun™ training. Through consistent and repetitive training, both with and without a partner, success in learning techniques can be achieved. Through repetition, the mind and body can unify.

There is no real substitute for repetition. Your mind and body develops the neural pathways after consistent use. If the body is called upon to use a particular area of the body consistently, the body will develop that particular area, both in muscle tone, bone and nervous tissue. The learning takes place in the Cerebellum, a part of the brain located at its lower back portion. This is a clever adaptation of the body, since it takes less time for the body part to react if the center for this processing is closer to the area that is involved, i.e., the arm or leg.

WINGTSUN™ WORKING

In order to defeat an attacker, Wing Tsun students have to train to do something at odds with one’s natural inclinations and that is to use no resistance at all in an attack. The attacker expects resistance but gets none. What he gets is empty space or what GGM Leung Ting calls a void. WingTsun is not the only martial art that has used this strategy but it is the only one to focus on the defeat of an attacker to this degree and conform to such logic.
