Best Self Defense Martial Art

One perspective is that the best self defense martial art is probably the one you are taking right now. This is because if you are currently learning something that bills itself as a self defense martial art and if you stop now and start over to learn a new set of reflexes it delays your ultimate goal of gaining self-defense skill. Self-defense is more than a set of techniques that you drill over and over. It is an attitude that you should be able to turn on and turn off and use instantly if the need arises.

Street Tactics and Street Clothes

We presented a special topics class today in Wing Tsun Concepts called ‘Street Tactics in Street Clothes.’ For that we took to the streets. Actually we held the class at Clark Park, Tempe. Real self-defense on the street requires more than technical skills. It requires some knowledge of the psychological aspects of avoiding the fight and what to do if it becomes inevitable. There is a psychological and physical difference between an experience training in the martial arts gymnasium and wearing street clothes in an everyday environment.

Learning Unique Skills

It did not take me long after beginning WingTsun™ training to figure out that I was learning certain high level skills in the martial arts. I had studied another style for eight years and during that time I read and read some more. We did not have the internet so I just read books and magazines about what exists in the martial arts world. At the time, I never thought I would have an opportunity to dive straight into the “deep end” of the practice of high level skills found mostly in the Chinese martial art systems.

Living in the present

Part of the philosophy of WingTsun training and follow through in a real self-defense situation is a sort of a present moment outlook which is that we focus on what we are doing now – not what occurred just a second ago and not what might occur in the next few seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks or even longer. This doesn’t mean we cannot have a goal. However we cannot let our mind drift and get torn away from our focus on the present moment. Our goal will be realized when it is and not before.

Little things add up to plenty

Speaking as a Wing Tsun Self Defense instructor, in Wing Tsun, little things add up to plenty. The Leung Ting WingTsun® system works on skills, which is a difference from some performance-oriented martial arts wherein the goal is to look good. When working on skills, we teach the way things function for maximum results in a self defense situation. In the process of doing this, the student learns the way the body works and how to self-train at home between classes for self defense application.

How to deal with weapon attacks

The most feared types of assaults are those that involve weapons. It appears that there is no way to protect oneself against the blade, the bullet or the bludgeon.

Indeed, these attacks are potentially lethal. In fact, the intent of such an attack should be regarded as intent to kill and therefore you, the defender should take any action possible to defend your life.
