Learning Any Martial Art 

In today’s world and the demand for instant gratification, we have instant messaging, fast food, everything is wireless, and we have ‘mixed martial arts’ which is assumed to bestow martial arts skills of several styles in relatively short order. The mind of the uninitiated novice might jump to the incorrect conclusion that learning several styles is no problem at all; just join an ‘MMA’ gym.

Of course this is not the case at all. To learn a martial art one must also train in a martial art. Unlike the movie “The Matrix” we cannot download kung fu skills into our cerebellum from a computer! The body must be trained.

Long range, Close range, Hard force then Soft

WingTsun™ is taught in stages. The most direct techniques are taught first, applying the techniques of the first form, (the little idea form). When somebody attacks by throwing a short hook or grabbing your shirt or neck from the front, the straight punch while quickly stepping in is your first fighting lesson, closing in from a longer range to close range, right in his face. This, of course, is very basic. Practice results in developing timing and position so that an attacker cannot easily counter-attack. The punch and the forward stance are based on the first few movements of the first form. These movements are efficient and address very common attacks.

Self Confidence

WingTsun™ training might take you out of your comfort zone. If so, this can only be a big plus for your self confidence, if not now, then in the very near future.

As a martial art, WingTsun is also a system for step-by-step learning. Once you have learned to do separate things with each hand at the same time, you know you are on your way.

Once you have learned to advance forward in a stance with all the weight on one leg allowing you to throw kick at an attacker with the unweighted leg without signaling your attacker, you know you have come further down the road.

The ability to intercept and stay with an attacker’s arms will give you further confidence that you can achieve more.

If an attacker can grab, block, or interrupt your punch without it affecting your forward advance, your kick, or your other hand, it will add to your self confidence.

Wing Tsun™ Dynamics

Wing Tsun is first learned as a series of fixed positions so that the beginner can become acquainted with the concepts used.  For example, we place many of our #defensive arm positions along the line that connects the chest of two participants.  This line is called the center-line.  It takes some practice to keep the positions constant while standing still.  When this skill is developed in a variety of technique positions, the student can then use them in more #dynamic self-defense applications.  Wing Tsun effectiveness lies in the learning of these basic concepts well and then applying these concepts to much more realistic attacks.

WingTsun™ Kup Jarn

Kup Jarn is a downward smashing elbow technique from WingTsun’s third form called Biu Tze  (thrusting fingers form). The form contains several advanced elbow techniques. 

The strike is with the point of the elbow while sticking to the attacker and borrowing his force.


WingTsun™ Sut Sau

The WingTsun Sut Sau technique is a special method of attacking the neck with the open hand.  It is taught in the third Wing Tsun form called Biu Tze (thrusting fingers form).  It is executed like a Biu Tze sau hand technique except that the strike is with the edge of the hand.

Your attacker’s force

A key thing to remember if you are ever assaulted is to slow the attacker down. An attacker depends on the element of surprise to be successful and so he will likely act suddenly and fast. One way to do this is to plant the bottom of your foot on his knee cap. If you have rooting, that is, a good plant on the ground with your other foot and a vertical posture, the power of this defending foot is not even as important as the forward pressure. You can slide this foot to either side of his and press. All the while you must keep your hands in a position to protect your upper body. In WingTsun, a kick is always accompanied by a hand technique. Once you have done damage to your attacker’s knee, you can advance forward and rain on his parade with chain punches.
