Personal guidance on learning coordination, self-defense

Proper posture and healthy breathing are crucial when beginning Wing Tsun classes. Be sure and join a school that has in-person training.

Wing Tsun techniques works in personal self-defense situations because of precise movement and the relaxed way we are taught to move but this takes focus and practice in and out of class.

We do not suggest weightlifting during your early training because the tendency is to increase any rigidity you may have from your daily life or previous training. Strength is not necessarily power. You will get power with speed and acceleration of your hands and feet. You also will have to take the shortest distance to the target. Usually this is a straight line but not always. To get speed and acceleration, you must be relaxed like a whip, not like a piece of wood.

The slow movements you learn at first are important for your brain. It helps you think and process and improve your brain health. It is also offered as an example of “slow vs. fast.”

Real self-defense requires flexible movement so that you can adapt to any situation without having to pre-think. Wing Tsun classes and your training build compact movements into your “muscle memory.”
